Flora 250 Launch

Wellington is celebrating a remarkable milestone in 2026, marking 250 years since one of its most influential figures made history.

In 1776, Wellington-born physician and botanist Dr William Withering published The Botanical Arrangement of All the Vegetables Naturally Growing in Great Britain—a groundbreaking work that became known simply as Withering’s Botany. Recognised as the nation’s first modern scientific plant compendium, it set the standard for botanical study in Britain for almost a century.

Now, 250 years on, the town is coming together to honour his legacy through Flora 250—a year-long programme of events celebrating Withering’s life, his work, and the natural world he was so passionate about.

Coordinated by Wellington H2A and Wellington Town Council, the programme will showcase everything from the beauty of local plant life to the rich heritage of the area, encouraging people to explore nature in all its forms—from ancient woodlands to their own gardens.

A wide range of events will be delivered by local groups throughout the year, offering plenty of opportunities for the community and visitors alike to get involved. As the programme continues to grow, more events are expected to be added.
