Wellington is set to welcome its first Urban Scarecrow Festival over the August Bank Holiday weekend, promising creativity, community spirit, and plenty of free family fun.
The festival begins on Friday, 22 August, with a Scarecrow Competition open to all Wellington residents. Whether you’re a seasoned crafter, a green-fingered gardener, or simply looking for a light-hearted challenge, you’re invited to create and display your scarecrow in the town for a chance to win one of three £25 prizes. The Wellington Telford Brass Band has already offered a sneak preview of its imaginative entry.
On Saturday 23 August, the celebrations will take place across two locations in town:

All Saints Church Green (9am–12pm) will host the Gardener’s Jumble, featuring stalls for selling or swapping plants, produce, and gardening tools. Local residents are being offered free stalls—a perfect chance to clear out the shed, sell homegrown fruit, vegetables, or flowers, and even raise money for holidays, a favourite charity, or a bit of extra pocket money. Visitors can also enjoy free activities such as decorating a plant pot and growing a seed, taking a rickshaw ride, and meeting local community groups.

Wellington Market Square (10am–2pm) will come alive with live music from Shire-ish Rovers, animal encounters with Wild Science, hands-on creativity with WelliArt, and the chance to make maple seed dragonflies with artist Anna. The Shropshire Wildlife Trust will also be on hand for a friendly chat.
The Urban Scarecrow Festival is free, family-friendly, and brimming with local charm. The event is kindly organised by Wellington Town Council, Shropshire, for everyone to enjoy.
