On Saturday 7 March, Market Square in Wellington was buzzing with excitement as the town celebrated Charter Day, marking the granting of Wellington’s first market charter in 1244.
The day kicked off with street games led by Jon Drew from Boardroom Cafe, whose wacky and wonderful games had children laughing and joining in the fun. Audiences were then treated to lively performances by the Ironmen & Severn Gliders Morris dancers throughout the afternoon.
The highlight of the day was The Charter Day Tale: A Mummers Play, a witty performance packed with cheese-themed puns that delighted spectators of all ages. Later, The Manor Court Convenes added a touch of historical theatre to the celebrations, accompanied by more Morris dancing.
The fun continued at The Pheasant Inn with the Battle of the Bakers (cheese edition), where Annette Ackerley impressed the judges with her cheesy chip bakes and claimed the victory.
It was a day full of laughter, music, and community spirit, bringing together locals and visitors to celebrate Wellington’s rich history in a wonderfully entertaining way.
